Our school band, The Kolan South State School Corps of Drums, was established in 1988. It is well known and one of only two school marching bands in the Bundaberg District. The band uses bass, tenor, and snare drums, along with cymbals and tambourines and consists of 26 students ranging from ages 9-11. The band performs at many local events each year, and the members commit to attending practice sessions twice a week all year round, to prepare beats and marching diagrams for these public performances. The band is in great need of new equipment, including drum shoulder straps, drum parts, hats, uniforms, new signage and is currently brainstorming fundraising ideas to raise the amount of money required to purchase this equipment. $1,000- would go a long way in supporting and updating our band. Most equipment that we currently use is nearly 30 years old and in need of replacing or constant major repairs.
This small school's Drum Corp is a very important part of the small community of South Kolan. It's participation in th local ANZAC Service is very much appreciated by the South Kolan community members and those from surrounding areas. Many, many children have benefited from the skills they gained as members of the Drum Corp including self discipline and respect for equipment. Our own children enjoyed their time druming and as a teacher at the school for many years I saw young children keenly await the year that they could join the Drum Corp. it would be great to see such a dedicated group of parents, students and staff be supported by much needed funding for equipment. Such funds are difficult to raise in a small rural area that is currently drought declared.
This school has a fantastic program running and definitely could do with some new equipment! Even though my children weren't part of the drum corp, I know how important it is in the community. Good luck everyone and keep up the good work from all of your friends in Victoria.
